IPOH: Seven schools in Perak will be closed for a week beginning today for sanitisation and disinfection activities.

The affected schools are SMK King Edward VII, Taiping; SMK(P) Treacher Methodist, Taiping; SMK Bukit Jana, Kamunting; SK Taman Jana, Kamunting; SK Convent Kota, Taiping; SK Ulu Mengkuang, Selama; and, SK Lekir Batu 8, Sitiawan.

State Education Committee chairman Razman Zakaria said, the closure was based on the National Security Council's (NSC) decision on Oct 9 to close schools that have recorded Covid-19 positive cases for seven days, without requiring a risk assessment from the Health Ministry.

"Therefore, we hope the schools affected will abide by our instructions to close their premises. Parents are urged not to panic and cooperate by complying with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that NSC and the Health Ministry have put in place to break the Covid-19 infection chain," he said in a statement today.

Razman also encouraged other schools to be proactive and conduct sanitisation activities at their premises.

"We also advise them to enforce strict SOPs on students, parents, teachers, and visitors who enter their school compound, especially if they have returned from high-risk areas to curb the Covid-19 transmission," he said.

On Oct 11, six schools in the Larut Matang Selama (LMS) District in Taiping were ordered to close for seven days after Covid-19 cases were detected involving school staff.

The six schools are also in close proximity to the Taiping detention camp, where the Batu Cluster was detected. - NST
