Don't play-play: Lat revisits his childhood games in 2021 calendar

 

KUALA LUMPUR: Missing the good ol' times, Lat-ely? Fret not. Malaysia's beloved cartoonist, Datuk Lat, has packaged them in his special calendar for 2021.

"Playtime with Lat" – a special calendar created in collaboration with MPH – features some of the caricaturist's favourite pastimes when he was a child growing up in a Perak kampung.

Most of the illustrations in the calendar come from the pages of his infamous "Kampung Boy: Yesterday and Today".

In the book, Lat recalls the mornings before school started, when pupils would find ways to kill boredom while waiting for the morning bell.

"We played whenever and whatever we could. Even the grass 'kemuncup' could be put to a competition," Lat recalls.

From common games like congkak and gasing, to peculiar ones such as bamboo popguns and ice-cream-stick helicopters, Lat revisits traditional childhood toys that once coloured the lives of many Malaysians.
