EC chief: Not suitable for Sarawak to hold state polls any time soon

Election Commission (EC) chief Abdul Ghani Salleh has told Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Abang Openg to not hold the state polls any time soon.

"In light of the (Covid-19) outbreak, we urge, if possible, that no election be held during this period.

"Why? (Because) it is not easy for us to take care of the safety of everyone. Anything could happen during an electoral campaign.

"This is a less suitable period (for state polls) to be held when the country is hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the view from us in the EC," he told a press conference.

On Oct 3, Abang Johari had told his party PBB that the Sarawak polls could be held "any time from now".

His remarks sparked fear that Sarawak could become the epicentre of a Covid-19 outbreak similar to what happened after the recently concluded Sabah polls.

The government has imposed conditional movement control order for Sabah from today.

Civil society and the oppositions have called for the Sarawak chief minister to postpone his plan for snap polls.

The Sarawak state government needs to call for a new mandate by June 2021 when its current term expires.  - Mkini
