Harapan urges PM to discuss Budget 2021 with opposition

The Pakatan Harapan presidential council in a statement today urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to immediately begin discussions with the opposition on Budget 2021 which is set to be tabled on Nov 6.

This comes after a meeting concerning the budget among Harapan leaders which took place at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng signed the statement.

They said that Budget 2021 should focus on the needs of frontliners, identify new strategies to develop the economy, and help millions of people who lost jobs or incomes due to the pandemic.

They also noted that many wish for the loan moratorium to be extended.

"Because of these reasons, the Harapan presidential council agrees with the Agong that it is important for Budget 2021 to be discussed with the opposition before being tabled at Parliament.

"Therefore, the Prime Minister has to heed the Agong's call to immediately discuss and negotiate with the opposition on the contents of Budget 2021 before it is tabled at Parliament on Nov 6, so that it achieves the objectives as stated by Tuanku," the statement read.

The presidential council is confident that all MPs will be involved in the debate session to ensure that the budget focuses on the country and the people.

Other Harapan leaders present at the meeting included Dzulkefly Ahmad, Lim Kit Siang, Khalid Samad, and M Kulasegaran.

Yesterday, the Agong had advised all MPs to support the Budget for the wellbeing of the people and called on lawmakers to put an end to political squabbling.

On Sunday, the king rejected Muhyiddin's bid for an emergency proclamation, but at the same time warned MPs against destabilising the government.

Critics have said that the emergency gambit was aimed at ensuring that the vote on Budget 2021 was not defeated in the Dewan Rakyat, amid pressure against Muhyiddin's government from Umno. - Mkini
