COVID-19 | The government today announced enhanced movement control orders for six Semporna localities and one in Kunak, Sabah that continue to record an increase in positive Covid-19 cases.
Already placed under a conditional MCO, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Sabah National Security Council had advised for 35,643 residents in the identified areas to be placed under full lockdown.
The six Semporna localities are Kg Bangau-Bangau, Kg Panji, Kg Air, Kg Selamat, Kg Simunul and Kg Pinggir Bakau; as well as Kg Pangkalan in Kunak.
Ismail said the government will deliver assistance to affected residents who are confined to their homes unless they have been granted special permission in the event of emergencies.
As Sabah continues to record the highest number of daily Covid-19 cases nationwide, Ismail today also announced a further extension to the enhanced MCO now enforced at the Tawau Prison and the Taman Ehsan staff quarters.
The government had previously extended the enhanced MCO there from Sept 26 to Oct 9.
"However, there continues to be new positive cases recorded and so taking into account the risk evaluation, the government has agreed to another extension from Oct 10 to Oct 25," said Ismail (below) during a press conference broadcasted online from his house where he is currently under home quarantine.
The minister also announced an extension to the current conditional MCOs enforced across Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu, initially set to be lifted on Oct 12.
"Taking into account new cases being recorded in these areas, today's meeting has agreed to extend the conditional MCOs from Oct 13 to Oct 26," he said.
Ismail further said new restrictions would be enforced for small boats from islands within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone as well as for larger vessels from neighbouring Indonesia and the Philippines.
From Oct 11, movement of small boats from the islands to the mainland would only be allowed from 6am to 2pm while locally registered fishing vessels can only land at selected jetties from 6am to 6pm, subject to approval from the local police chief.
Aside from Sabah, Ismail also announced a two-week enhanced MCO beginning Sunday for the Pokok Sena Prison in Kedah as well as its staff quarters.
He said the move will affect 3,262 inmates and 587 staff.
In recent weeks, Sabah and Kedah have largely contributed to the spike in new positive Covid-19 cases with daily three-digit increases with new clusters being detected. - Mkini
