MELBOURNE: A Malaysian businessman was sentenced by the County Court of Victoria today to six years in jail for his role in a transnational drug syndicate.

A report by The Australian said the man, Goh Beng Lee, had planned to exchange a package of heroin outside the Immigration Museum in Melbourne city centre for AUD155,000 (RM459,456) on Jan 8, 2019.

He was supposed to fly back home and pass the money to a drug supplier known as “Mr Hanoi” in Malaysia.

The heroin was trafficked by Malaysian flight attendant Zailee Zainal and hidden in her underwear and bra, under the instruction of the syndicate operator on the Australian side, Michelle Tran, the court was told.

Zailee was caught by Australian Border Force at Melbourne Airport two days before the arranged meeting, while Goh was arrested outside the museum and taken into custody.

Goh, 40, pleaded guilty to a charge of “trafficking a marketable quantity of heroin”.

Tran and Zailee had also pleaded guilty to their role in the syndicate.

According to Judge Michael Cahill, Goh was the son of hawkers who sold noodles by the street in a small Malaysian town.

He went on to get married, had two daughters, and became the founder of an award-winning medical manufacturing business in the country before his involvement in the syndicate. - FMT
