Malls hit by Covid-19 advised to close for a week

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said it is advisable for shopping malls which have to close due to confirmed Covid-19 cases to remain closed for one week.

This is in order to facilitate disinfection and sanitisation works as well as contact tracing by the ministry, he said.

“It is very important for the Health Ministry to continue to screen the workers and do contact tracing as well as disinfection and sanitisation operations in the malls.

“So we advise a week to let the Health Ministry to clean up the area. We hope that we will be given a week to contact trace all the infections in the malls,” Noor Hisham said during his daily press conference today which was live-streamed on Facebook.

He was responding to a question on what factors the ministry took into account when deciding on the closure of a shopping mall.

It was announced today that the 1 Utama shopping mall (above) had been ordered to shut effective tomorrow (Oct 11) after the discovery of four Covid-19 cases among staff and workers at its premises.

Thus far, it is the only mall which has been ordered to close temporarily.

Meanwhile, the director-general also assured the public that the situation in Kedah was under control.

He said most of the cases in Kedah were from the prison clusters such as the Tembok cluster.

While there were also some cases involving individuals returning from Sabah, he again stressed that the situation was manageable and the ministry has been successful in conducting close contact tracing. - Mkini
