COVID-19 | Perak's chapter of the National Security Council (NSC) has ruled that there was no need for an enhanced movement control order (MCO) for the Kamunting Correctional Detention Centre (Kemta).
In a statement today, Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu said that the Covid-19 outbreak in the facility was under control.
"The NSC found that the spread of Covid-19 only involved one block," he added.
He said prison staff at that block has been reduced and they have to don personal protective equipment while there.
Prison staff is not allowed to have contact with prisoners and there will be no transfer of inmates for now.
Faizal said that there have been no new cases attributed to the Batu cluster today. This cluster is attributed to Kemta.
"Therefore, the people in the Kamunting and Taiping vicinity are advised not to panic and to not spread fake news.
"The state government urges the public to follow new normals to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the community," he added.
Earlier today, a statement by the Prison Department had caused some confusion as it had declared that the enhanced MCO was now in effect in Kemta until Oct 29.
However, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is the NSC spokesperson, did not make similar announcements.
An MCO declaration can only be gazetted by the Health Ministry. - Mkini
