Muhyiddin cancels meeting with MBs, CMs after Agong rejects emergency

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s meeting with all state menteris besar and chief ministers tomorrow has been cancelled, after a failed bid to declare a state of emergency.

The meeting cancellation was confirmed by an aide to Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari in a message to the press.

“The meeting which the menteri besar was scheduled to attend tomorrow morning in Putrajaya has been cancelled by the organisers,” the message read.

Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg had also reinstated his programme for tomorrow which was supposedly cancelled earlier today.

Earlier, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had decided not to accede to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's request to declare a state of emergency.

The ruler, in a statement released through the comptroller of the royal household Ahmad Fadli Shamsuddin, had also rebuked MPs who are politicking and asked them not to proceed with any action that could threaten the stability of the government.

Muhyiddin had earlier today reportedly called for a meeting with all state menteris besar and chief ministers in Putrajaya tomorrow, which was confirmed by the Selangor MB office and the Perak MB office.

The invite came just a few weeks after DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang had cried foul over the absence of Amirudin, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow from a National Security Council (NSC) meeting on Covid-19.

The meeting, which was chaired by Muhyiddin, discussed the latest surge of positive cases in Malaysia, after last month’s Sabah state election.

Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang state governments are led by coalitions that are in opposition to the federal government led Muhyiddin.

Lim said Chow had told him he did not attend the meeting because he was not invited.

“Why has the Perikatan Nasional government decided to play politics again instead of showing an example of uniting all Malaysians regardless of party politics in the face of a new wave of the pandemic?” Lim had asked then. - Mkini
