New state govt with some Umno reps, not whole party - Johor Harapan chief

Johor Pakatan Harapan chairperson Aminolhuda Hassan clarified today that there was no invitation made to Umno to potentially form a new Johor state government if the latter withdraws its support for Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Aminolhuda in a statement said his remarks as reported by a Malay-daily yesterday were inaccurate.

"I would like to deny the reported remarks because when I was asked, I had said that a new government can be formed through cooperation with any assemblypersons as individuals who accepted the PH++ concept, and not with the party (Umno) en bloc as reported.

"I reiterate my stand that the formation must be based on an individual assemblyperson's desire to create a stable government, not one like the current situation where the Johor government has a razor-thin majority," he said.

Responding to Aminolhuda's initially reported remarks, Johor DAP denied that Harapan had decided to form a new state government with Umno if the latter decides to withdraw its support for PN.

In a statement last night, Johor DAP said it was caught off guard by Aminolhuda's remark.

"Johor Harapan always engages in discussion on every plan and action.

"As a component party of Johor Harapan, we are quite shocked by the statement on the invitation for cooperation between Johor Harapan and Umno to form the state government.

Johor DAP said the matter was never discussed in the state Harapan leadership council.

They stressed that any effort to return the people's mandate and form the government must be done through consensus of the Johor Harapan leadership council.

In response to Umno considering retracting its support for PN, Berita Harian yesterday quoted Aminolhuda as saying that Johor Harapan was ready to establish a relationship with Umno for the purpose of forming the state government.

Besides Umno lawmakers, Aminolhuda said the coalition was also ready to accept lawmakers who were once with them during the 2018 polls.

Aminolhuda, who is the Parit Yaani assemblyperson, said the current PN state government, which controls the state assembly with a slim majority of two seats, would fall if Umno quits supporting PN.

Umno controls 14 of the 56 state seats.

The other parties in the state assembly are Bersatu (14 seats), MIC (two), and PAS (one).

Harapan, which comprises PKR, DAP, and Amanah, controls 27 seats in the Johor assembly. DAP has the largest number of seats in the coalition (14 seats), followed by Amanah (nine), and PKR (four).

"Johor Umno must be sincere and not expect any reward because Harapan is a transparent party that takes care of the interest and stability of the state," said Aminolhuda as quoted by Berita Harian. - Mkini
