PAS thanked Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Rakyat Sabah (Star) for giving Sabah PAS secretary Aliakbar Gulasan a chance to prove himself as an appointed state assemblyperson.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan (above) said the party was confident that Aliakbar, as a Sabahan with experience as a Universiti Malaysia Sabah senior lecturer, can contribute to the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government.
The Sabah PAS secretary was appointed as an assemblyperson yesterday.
PBS president Maximus Ongkili said the party stood by its position that there was no need to set a precedent in appointing "a member of a Malaya-based religious party" to the Sabah Legislative Assembly.
However, Ongkili said, since the matter was done with, PBS will serve as a check and balance to address the concerns of Sabahans.
"We, too, look forward to working with the PAS representative who has a good background in academia and hails from Tenom.
"I am confident that Aliakbar Gulasan (above), who was appointed as the elected assemblyperson, will seek to disprove the wrong things and perceptions of the public regarding PAS in Sabah," Ongkili said in a statement yesterday.
Meanwhile, Star president and deputy chief minister Jeffrey Kitingan said appointing PAS into the state legislature was unfortunate.
However, he had kind words for Aliakbar, noting that the latter had publicly disapproved of a PAS leader's statement concerning the Bible in Parliament.
PAS was not fielded in the Sabah state election. All its previous attempts at winning a seat in Sabah have been unsuccessful.
The Sabah State Assembly has 73 elected representatives. The state Constitution, however, allows the chief minister to appoint six nominated assemblypersons - who have full voting powers. - Mkini
