PKR said it will respect the statement by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi earlier today where the latter reaffirmed Umno’s support for Perikatan Nasional (PN).
However, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (above) said his party will continue its efforts to “restore the people’s mandate” – a term that the party uses to refer to efforts to mount a counter-coup against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration.
“PKR takes cognisant and respects the statement made by the Umno president today.
“At the same time, we will continue efforts towards restoring the people’s mandate together with MPs who share the same hopes and ambitions, which is to correct the national leadership’s direction especially in efforts to combat Covid-19, invigorate and revive the economy, and redouble efforts to solve the people’s problems,” said Saifuddin in a statement today.
Earlier today, Zahid laid out Umno's official stance on several issues.
Among others, he announced a “political ceasefire” and said his party will strengthen its cooperation with all PN parties.
This announcement came just a week after Umno’s political bureau chaired by Zahid resolved to consider withdrawing support for PN and to discuss new terms for further cooperation with Muhyiddin's government.
The move came at a critical juncture when PKR president Anwar Ibrahim was relying on support from Umno MPs to bolster his majority claim in the Dewan Rakyat. - Mkini
