Covid-19 | Police officers are now allowed to issue compound notices against individuals who breach Covid-19 prevention procedures on the spot without having to bring offenders to a police station.
Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced this in his press conference aired live on Facebook earlier today.
"In order to ease the workload of police officers on the ground, the Attorney-General's Chambers has allowed the police to issue compounds on the spot to any individual found to violate standard operating procedures.
"Any police officer of the rank inspector and above can issue the compound on the spot," he said.
Prior to this, police personnel and officers had to bring individuals who flout procedures under the recovery movement control order (MCO) to a police station before a compound notice can be issued against them.
Recently, several individuals arrested for allegedly breaching procedures had raised their complaint on social media over the way police handled their cases.
They claimed that the authorities had further exposed suspects to the risk of Covid-19 infection as they were taken on police vehicles in large groups and made to wait at police stations without physical distancing.
Meanwhile, according to Ismail, the police, yesterday arrested a total of 357 individuals for various offences related to SOP compliance.
These include five who breached their quarantine order, but no further details were revealed.
Of the 357, police have acquired remand orders against 35, while two were released on bail, while the rest were issued compounds. - Mkini
