PUTRAJAYA: Schools in red zones will only be closed if there are infections within the community.

Education Minister Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin said just because a school is located in a red zone district, there has to be infections within the community for the school to be closed in order to protect the students and staff.

He cited an example of schools in the north-east district of Penang, which is declared a red zone.

Mohd Radzi said the ministry closes schools based on the advice of the Health Ministry.

"According to the Health Ministry, the infections in this district were happening within the prison and the infection rate is under control there," he said after attending a meeting with state and district education officers from Sabah, Selangor, Labuan, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

All these areas are under the controlled movement control order (MCO).

He added that besides schools in red zones, schools with positive Covid-19 cases and in areas under the controlled MCO will also be closed. - Star
