'Serious' Ismail says dissolution of Parliament not discussed in cabinet

A special cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin this morning did not discuss the issue of a purported demand from Umno for a dissolution of Parliament, according to Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said this in denying a viral screenshot message that Umno is seeking dissolution, a day after Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah rejected Muhyiddin's proposal for a state of emergency to be declared.

"I cannot smile, I cannot laugh, (this is) serious.

"Nowadays we see there are a lot of untrue stories being shared," said Ismail during his daily Covid-19 update press conference.

Ismail was previously criticised after he appeared to be taking queries lightly concerning public confusion that came following the government's issuance of a work-from-home order.

The viral message today consists of a Whatsapp chat screenshot, in which Ismail allegedly informed division leaders that Umno ministers would be pushing for dissolution in today's cabinet meeting.

"I am pleased to inform that even though by right I'm not supposed to inform, the matter of Parliament dissolution was not discussed at all in the cabinet meeting today.

"So even though I can't say it, to answer the question, it (Parliament dissolution) was not raised or discussed," said the Umno vice-president when asked about the matter.

Earlier today, Umno supreme council member Razlan Rafii had similarly denounced the message as fake, while Ismail's aide told Malaysiakini it was intended to hurt Umno's image.

Umno’s supreme council is scheduled to meet tonight to discuss proposals raised during the BN meeting held earlier today at PWTC.

The meetings today also followed rumours of Muhyiddin's intention to resign as prime minister.
