Umno has called for the loan moratorium to be reinstated from October to December to help the people face a new wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also wants the government to order banks to cease any auction or bankruptcy proceedings for six months or a year after the moratorium ends.
"Banks in the country need to be attentive to the plight of those who have truly been affected by Covid-19 and weigh their actions based on the spread of this serious disease," he said in a statement.
A six-month loan moratorium had ended on Sept 30.
However, those who had lost their jobs and have yet to be re-employed will get a three month-extension.
Those who have had their salaries cut will, meanwhile, will have their repayment amount reduced.
Covid-19 cases have been surging recently, with the number of infections yesterday and today reaching record highs.
Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has said it appeared to be the beginning of a new wave of infections. - Mkini
