COVID-19 | The end of the conditional movement control order (MCO) for Sabah and Klang Valley may have initially been fixed for Oct 26 and 27 respectively, but Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob now says that is not set in stone as the situation is still fluid.
“We still do not know whether the conditional MCO that we announced will be extended or ended.
“For Selangor and the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, it was supposed to end on Oct 27 and for Sabah, we had set a date as well, but we do not know.
“The situation will change from time to time,” Ismail said in a press conference today.
What will help expedite the end of the conditional MCO, he said, is the public's compliance to the standard operating procedure (SOP) as issued by the government.
"If you comply with the SOP from the government, practise self-discipline like wearing face masks, washing your hands frequently, social distancing and complying with the allowed activities, then InsyaAllah (God willing), maybe the area declared under conditional MCO will have the order ended and you can have your freedom again," Ismail said.
However, he reminded that even after the conditional MCO is lifted, the public still has to follow certain SOP under the recovery MCO.
At the same time, he denied reports of Malacca being placed under enhanced MCO, calling it “fake news”.
“I hold this press conference every day, and if you watch my daily press conferences, I have never said that Malacca would be placed under enhanced MCO.
“If I did not announce it and the Health Ministry director-general did not announce it, then it is fake news. So do not believe (the fake news),” Ismail added.
He was referring to a message going viral on social media, which consists of what appears to be a news article stating Malacca residents would not be allowed to cross state borders starting midnight on Oct 19 till Nov 4, as purportedly announced by the senior minister.
On a separate matter, Ismail said an enhanced MCO will be imposed on Kampung Saguking Laut and Kampung Sebor Baru in Labuan due to the rise in Covid-19 cases in those areas.
The enhanced MCO will take effect there from Oct 21 till Nov 3. It will affect 8,062 residents.
While the SOP will be similar to the enhanced MCO announced before this, he added that barter trade activity which is done in those areas will also not be allowed during the enhanced MCO period.
However, there are some loosened restrictions for economic activities within the enhanced MCO area, such as sundry shops and food premises which will be allowed to operate from morning until 6pm for takeaway only, he added.
