Yeoh calls to improve police welfare as more cops get Covid-19

DAP Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh today urged Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin to look into measures that could protect the police from being infected with Covid-19.

In a statement today, she raised concern over a report that 147 police officers have tested positive for the coronavirus as of Oct 13.

"With the surge of cases among police personnel and their community, it is high time for the home minister to look into improving the welfare of police personnel. This includes ensuring that their work stations and housing facilities are not congested.

"Can our police officers practically apply the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) by practising social distancing in their current workstation? Many police stations and their housing quarters are found wanting.

"I urge the minister to also ensure that adequate protective gears, including thermal scanners, face masks and hand sanitisers, are sufficiently provided for our police force at their work stations and also when they are on duty at various mobile stations," she said.

"Protecting our frontliners is an important component in this fight against Covid-19. As such, the government must step up its game in protecting our police frontliners, who put their lives at risk every day, so that we can all be safe," added the former deputy women, family and community development minister.

Bukit Aman Management Department director Ramli Din was reported as saying that 147 police officers, 106 of their family members and 10 non-uniform staff attached with the police have been infected with Covid-19 as of Tuesday.

"The Kuala Lumpur police contingent had the highest number of cases with 36, which included five officers,” Ramli was quoted as saying by The Malaysian Insight.

To date, the Cheras police district headquarters has recorded 19 Covid-19 cases, the highest number of cases in Kuala Lumpur involving police personnel. - Mkini
