4 tested positive for Covid-19 in Parliament, sitting postponed to Monday

PARLIAMENT | The Dewan Rakyat sitting has been postponed to Monday (Aug 2) after four individuals were found positive for Covid-19 during the special Parliament sitting this week.

Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Rashid Hasnon had earlier today announced that two cases were detected in Parliament within the past three days, and adjourned the sitting for a fourth time so that everyone can be screened immediately.

Rashid said this when he returned to the Dewan Rakyat at 3.30pm after the third adjournment of the day.

“The Health Ministry was informed at 12.30pm about two positive Covid-19 cases who have been to Parliament.

“The first case is a staff member who had attended Parliament from Monday to Wednesday. The second case was detected on Thursday (today) during a screening in Parliament using an RTK-Antigen test," he said.

“Both these cases have been in several locations throughout Parliament. Hence, we are asking for a test to be done on everyone who is in attendance today, including MPs, officers, Parliament staff and so on.

“No one is allowed to leave Parliament until the results are obtained,” he added.

After he made this announcement, he said the session will once again be adjourned to 5.15pm.

Earlier, Parliament had been adjourned three times after there was an uproar among lawmakers because Istana Negara had released a statement reprimanding the government’s revocation of emergency ordinances without going through proper procedures.

Anwar Ibrahim (Harapan-Port Dickson) had brought up the statement in Dewan Rakyat shortly after it was released.

Following the two Covid-19 cases detected in Parliament, Anwar called it a “ruse”, saying they could have conducted screenings without complicating Parliament proceedings.

He accused the government of trying to obstruct the Dewan Rakyat sitting after he submitted a motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin after the Istana Negara statement.

When Rashid returned to the Dewan at 5.15pm, he said two more Covid-19 cases were detected during the screening process.

He urged all those who attended Parliament from Monday to Wednesday but were not present today to immediately get tested at their nearest screening facility.

After that, he announced Parliament will be adjourned again, which was met with shouts of disagreements from opposition MPs. - Mkini
