Booze. Drugs. Porn. Women. Karaoke. Dancing – all in a police station by policemen.
It’s one story you wouldn’t dream of scripting: the police chief, three corporals and four civilian women bringing down the roof of the Bangi police station with a boisterous party during the lockdown.
They indulged in all things prohibited at a police station, making a mockery of the law and embarrassing the police force.
That they turned their station into a mini nightclub can be likened to driving a patrol car into a public swimming pool – while naked.
To think they did it on Hari Raya Haji and at a time when hungry people wait in line to get food from do-gooders is revolting.
What were the policemen thinking?
The “DStress” room on the second floor of the building had a bar with Chivas Regal bottles and ketum juice, swivelling disco ball light, speakers, audio system equipment, microphones and a television set.
They lived up to the relaxation concept of the room by inviting four women, aged between 21 and 37, to sing and dance with them. Lewd photographs of one of the women were supposedly found on one of the policemen’s mobile phone.
Who are these women? Could they be foreigners or perhaps even detainees? Were Covid-19 protocols observed for them when they came to the station?
The public launched into a vein-bulging frenzy. In an instant, the praise of police as protectors switched to contempt.
The police force suffered another humiliation of its men indulging in wild parties during the pandemic.
Bukit Aman didn’t need the hostility at a time when dedicated law enforcers were working 24/7 to keep people safe.
Still, Bukit Aman’s integrity and standards compliance department (JIPS) did well to publicly expose the scandal but they forgot to mention that the station chief, a 54-year-old sub-inspector, was once one of its officers dealing with rank and file misconduct.
Another thing: JIPS officers struck at 6pm following a tip-off from the public, leaving many to ponder whether the call went like this, “Hello police, there’s a party going on at the police station.”
What were the other personnel at the station doing when the merrymaking was going on?
When such incidents occur, the public remains sceptical of police investigations.
In public interest, police must immediately disclose the various offences the culprits are being investigated for to allay accusations of a cover-up.
Aside from breach of Covid-19 guidance, there’s the possession and consumption of ketum, pornographic material, dereliction of duty, misconduct and bringing the name of the police force to disrepute.
Were the cops carrying weapons while partying?
At least this time, the police did not refer to the policemen as civil servants as Dang Wangi police did when three officers and a constable were arrested on suspicion of being involved in a wild party with 28 others at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last month.
A JIPS inspector, a deputy superintendent, attached to the Selangor police headquarters, another inspector who is with the narcotics division in Penang and a constable stationed in Jinjang are facing the sack.
While investigations are in progress, all the boozing cops could perhaps be made to watch non-stop the movie Bukit Kepong, which portrays the police force as having indomitable and heroic spirit. - FMT
