KUALA LUMPUR: Police are to call up a woman who claimed in a viral video that the increase in Covid-19 cases in Selangor was a result of cases at a glove factory.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the video could cause fear among the public about the Covid-19 outbreak in Selangor.

An investigation paper was also opened against the factory operator for alleged negligence that might lead to the transmission of the infectious disease to others.

Fakhrudin said the woman had alleged that the outbreak originated from the factory operator’s action in not adhering to the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).

He said the three-minute footage showed the woman introducing herself as the chairman of a coalition of non-governmental organisations in the state.

“She claimed that the increase of Covid-19 cases was due to the glove factory’s operator, who moved positive (infected) workers from their dormitory in Petaling Jaya to two hotels in Klang so that they could go to work during the EMCO period,” he said in a statement today.

Fakhrudin said the woman also alleged that there were deaths from Covid-19 infections among the factory’s workers, which resulted in the workers’ dormitory in Sungai Way being placed under EMCO, while the factory is still in operation.

Fakhrudin said Klang Utara district police had opened an investigation paper against the factory operator under the Penal Code for negligence that might lead to the transmission of the infectious disease to others, and also for not adhering to valid orders issued by the health ministry. - FMT
