Cops warn political parties against physical meetings

Police will open investigations against politicians and political parties if there is information that they conducted physical meetings during the total movement control order (MCO).

Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani was reported by Sinar Harian as warning all political parties to not hold such meetings when the MCO or EMCO is in effect.

The news report quoted Acryl Sani as saying that he believed that political parties understood the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that have been set by the National Security Council.

“However, if police receive any information or report on such gatherings, we will definitely open investigation papers,” he reportedly said.

The country has been placed under a “total lockdown” that began on June 1, which was aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19.

Under the lockdown order, which is known as MCO 3.0, the government has banned all kinds of physical meetings, including those for official government business.

However, it was recently highlighted by Malaysiakini that politicians from Umno, which is a part of the ruling government, have been physically meeting recently, including at a mansion along Jalan Bellamy and at the Defence Ministry’s Wisma Perwira in Kuala Lumpur.

These meetings were believed to be connected to strong speculations that Umno is planning to withdraw its support for the Perikatan Nasional government. - Mkini
