Three Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) activists have been summoned for questioning tomorrow over the forthcoming #Lawan protest they plan to hold on July 31.
According to Undi18 co-founder Qyira Yusri, those summoned include Suaram coordinator Mohammad Alshatri and Undi18 co-founder Tharma Pillai.
“This is regarding the case of the protest at Dataran Merdeka on July 31 and it is the first time police are investigating this case,” she told Malaysiakini.
Previously, police questioned SSR activists over an earlier protest that was held at Dataran Merdeka on July 17, which included Mohammad and Tharma.
The group now plans to hold another protest at the same venue this Saturday.
In a statement, SSR said the three activists were summoned to the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur for investigations under Section 505(b) for the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
Section 505(b) pertains to the making of statements conducing to public mischief, while Section 233 pertains to the improper use of network facilities.
SSR today claimed that police have summoned more than 30 activists for investigation over the protests demanding Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation.
It is also demanding that Parliament be fully reopened, and for an automatic moratorium on loan repayments to be extended to everyone.
The group decried the investigations as “threats and intimidation” but reiterated that it will proceed with the July 31 protest with adherence to health protocols.
“Youths will still go on the streets on July 31 at Dataran Merdeka. We have the right to assemble and we will do so while complying with health protocols.
“We will show the incompetent ministers that the voice of the people is sacred. We will fight this intimidation,” it added. - Mkini
