IGP: No indication contract doctors' strike will threaten public order

Inspector-general of police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said there is no indication that the planned strike by contract doctors will threaten public order.

Acryl Sani said police have taken note of the nationwide protest and will help ensure that proper precautions are taken amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

"To date, the Royal Malaysian Police have not received any information that the protest will affect public order.

"However, police will deploy standard operating procedure (SOP) monitoring teams to observe the protests.

"This is to ensure that all SOPs being enforced under the National Recovery Plan (NRP) will be abided by during the activity," Acryl Sani said in a statement.

Government contract doctors are planning a mass walkout at 11am today.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, strike organisers have called on participants to ensure a substitute is on duty while they are away and those in critical services will return to their post if the need arises.

Those managing public hospitals have threatened action against any contract doctors who participate in the strike.

The contract doctors are lobbying for better job security and career prospects.

Government junior contract doctors face the risk of losing their jobs after the end of their five-year training at government hospitals.

There is a lack of permanent positions at public hospitals due to the government's budgetary constraints.

As a result, many of them have to move to the private sector or continue their specialist training abroad.

Last Friday (July 23), the government offered to extend their contracts for up to four years, but stopped short of offering permanent positions.

However, it promised to ensure their received similar perks as the doctors on permanent service.

Hartal Doktor Kontrak, the strike organiser, described it as "half-baked", stressing that offering contract extension was not the solution.  - Mkini
