Jobless man’s family to sue after he dies in custody

Zahari Ayub’s father and sister lodged a police report against the anti-drugs agency’s officers.

PETALING JAYA: The family of a 24-year-old jobless man are planning to sue the National Anti-Drugs Agency over his death last week, two days after he was taken into custody.

The family’s lawyer, Mohamad Ashraf Ahmad Sohaimi, said the victim’s parents and sister had lodged a police report in preparation for filing the civil claim.

He added that the family had also called for a fair investigation by the authorities.

According to the report, the victim, Zahari Ayub, was arrested on July 18 by the agency’s officers at his house in Gurun, Kedah.

The family members alleged that they saw the agency’s officers beating Zahari with a baton while he was handcuffed.

The next day, the family were told that Zahari was in critical condition in Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungei Petani, Kedah. He died the following day, July 20.

Following the incident, the man’s family lodged a police report, urging the police to investigate the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Ashraf said the victim’s family was called today to Sungai Petani police station for an identification parade. “They managed to identify two suspects during the identification parade,” he added.
