Kelantan impose Covid-19 test condition ahead of Aidiladha

An additional negative Covid-19 test condition has been imposed for all travellers to Kelantan ahead of the Hari Raya Aidiladha festivities on Tuesday.

The new condition for travellers to test negative within 72 hours, on top of existing police approval to cross state borders, will be imposed for a week beginning yesterday following a decision by the state Disaster Management Committee.

Kelantan state development director Mohd Roshdi Ismail in a circular said the move was taken to ensure all inbound travellers will be free of the coronavirus.

"The Covid-19 test must be either the RTK-Antigen or RT-PCR.

"If the test was not done, travellers must do so at state borders in Gua Musang, Jeli, Pasir Puteh and the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, Pengkalan Chepa," he said.

It is understood the decision was also taken in response to concern over a surge of inbound travellers to celebrate Aidiladha this Tuesday - traditionally marked on a grander scale in Kelantan compared to other states.

Kelantan health director Dr Zaini Hussin said health officers have been deployed at all four entries to the state.

"For now the condition will be imposed for one week.

"We will see the results from this approach," Zaini said when contacted.

Kelantan state deputy police chief Abdullah Mohamad Piah reportedly said police estimate that between three and five percent additional out of state motorists had entered Kelantan via Jeli since Friday.

On Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had warned travellers to learn from the spike of Covid-19 cases recorded after the Aidilfitri celebrations in May, as some 200,000 people defied the interstate travel ban and returned to their hometowns. - Mkini
