KOTA KINABALU: Local Government and Housing Minister Masidi Manjun said the results of targeted screening in Pulau Gaya were the main contributor to the sharp increase in Covid-19 cases in Kota Kinabalu today.

He said the district recorded 120 cases, an increase of 48 cases compared to yesterday, with 92 cases arising from the targeted screening in Kampung Laban (62 cases) and Kampung Pondo (30), both in Pulau Gaya.

“Besides that, a new cluster, Bahtera Barat, contributed five more cases in Kota Kinabalu today, while other cases were from close contact screening of 18 cases, symptomatic screening of four cases, and one case from other categories,” he said at his daily briefing.

Masidi, who is the state spokesperson for Covid-19, said the West Ark Cluster recorded today involved the spread of infection at the Saputra Erb West Rig oil exploration rig.

The index case was a 31-year-old worker on the rig. He did not show any symptoms but was confirmed positive in the screening of the ship’s sign-off procedure on June 8 while undergoing mandatory quarantine at a hotel in Kota Kinabalu, Masidi said. - FMT
