Maskless man remanded after ‘provoking’ cops at petrol station

A man who allegedly provoked police officers who were issuing him a compound for not wearing a mask in public has been remanded for four days, starting today.

He had filmed the exchange with the officers in a viral video that he posted on his Facebook account.

According to a Berita Harian report, the remand order was issued by the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court today.

The 29-year-old suspect, who was arrested by the police at an apartment in Bandar Sri Damansara in Petaling Jaya, Selangor last night, was represented by lawyer Rahmat Hazlan.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the arrest was made after a report on the video was lodged yesterday.

“Investigations found that the incident on July 19 happened around 12.30pm at a petrol station in Bandar Sri Damansara.

“The suspect, who was a local, was issued a compound for not wearing a face mask in public,” he said in a statement.

Referring to the video, Fakhrudin said the man refused to cooperate and “provoked” the officers in charge by questioning their actions.

“He also uttered abusive words towards the officers on duty and issued statements that could threaten public tranquillity,” he said.

The 15-minute video started with the detainee claiming he was being harassed at the petrol station.

He also accused a police officer of “going against the law” for attempting to retrieve his phone as he was recording them.

Abang polis ke abang gangster? (Are you a police officer or are you a gangster?)" he further questioned the officer.

When the police accused him of provoking them, he said he had no intention to provoke but merely wanted to top up his Touch 'n Go card, adding that there was no one around him at that time.

Later, while alone in his car, he lambasted the police officers and said citizens who still comply with the police have “lost their minds”.

“Give me this ****ing paper, I will do ****ing nothing with it. I will do absolutely ****ing nothing with it.

“Take me to jail bro. I have no problems with it,” he said.

Recounting the earlier situation, he said it could have gone sideways if he had lost his temper and slapped one of the officers.

He also revealed that it was his second time getting a compound but did not specify if it was for the same reason.

Fakhrudin said the case is currently being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for refusing to cooperate with the officers on duty, as well as Section 504 and Section 505(b) of the same code for humiliating the police with intent to cause harm to break public peace and intend to go against public tranquillity.

He added that it is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for inappropriate behaviour in public. - Mkini
