ALOR SETAR: A popular rice miller in Jitra here was found to have packed 40g less for every bag of rice when the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry officers conducted a raid recently.

The ministry’s Kubang Pasu enforcement chief Muniandy Kanan said the mill had been operating for decades with the latest weighing equipment and all four rice mills in the factory showed a 40g deficit in all their packages.

He said for a 5kg bag of local rice, only 4.94kg was detected. The 10kg and 30kg bags also showed shortages of 40g.

Muniandy said the factory packs at least 2,000 bags of rice daily in 5kg, 10kg and 30kg sizes. He said a 10kg bag was sold at RM23 while the 5kg bag went for RM12.

“In our spot check on the factory with an expert metrologist, the weighing scales were not tampered with and were showing accurate numbers, but a lower amount,” he said when contacted.

He said the company would be investigated under Section 10 of the Consumer Protection Act 199 for making a false or misleading representation of products, which carries a fine of RM100,000 upon conviction. - FMT
