The group Gabungan Bertindak Memorandum Rakyat Malaysia (GBMRM) has threatened to hold a nationwide protest on Saturday (July 17) if Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin does not resign.
They claimed Muhyiddin has lost majority support in Parliament but is refusing to relinquish the premiership.
In a memorandum to the Istana Negara, GBMRM claimed to represent 42 NGOs and urged the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to take stern action against the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government for supposedly failing to observe the principles of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.
“Clearly the PN government does not respect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decrees because to date, the PN government still wishes to maintain its hold on power even though it no longer has the support of a majority of MPs.
“Once majority support is lost, the prime minister ought to resign immediately. However, to date, he still considers himself the rightful prime minister. Therefore, we give the deadline of July 16.
“If Muhyiddin still refuses to step down as stipulated in the Federal Constitution, we will gather peacefully throughout Malaysia on July 17 while following (Covid-19) standard operating procedures,” the group said in a statement.
Earlier, GBMRM sent the memorandum to the palace, urging it to intervene in getting Muhyiddin to step down.
Its representative Mustapa Mansor confirmed the memorandum was handed to a palace official yesterday.
Among those supporting the move include Pertubuhan Solidariti Madani Malaysia, Majlis Gabungan Media Digital Malaysia, Otai Reformis 1998, Suara Prihatin Rakyat Malaysia, and Pertubuhan Pelancongan Muslim Perak.
The move comes amid increasing unrest towards the government’s management of the Covid-19 situation. Umno has also withdrawn its support for Muhyiddin, though it is unclear how many of the party's MPs would heed the party’s supreme council decision.
In a related development, Free Malaysia Today reported that banners with anti-government messages have been erected in several towns across Malaysia.
The report, which cited photos of the banners posted by internet users, claimed they were erected in Beserah, Kampung Air Puteh, and Paya Besar in Kuantan and criticised politicians for ignoring the people’s problems.
The banners were also said to be spotted in Chukai, Kemaman in the state of Terengganu, which reportedly read, “The people are suffering, while the stupid government is hungry for power.” - Mkini
