No royal nod yet for early Penang assembly sitting

Penang is considering a state assembly sitting before the emergency ends on Aug 1, subject to consent by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has yet to receive a reply from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on its proposal to convene the state assembly before the emergency ends on Aug 1.

Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state executive council was considering three options in calling the assembly, one of which was to hold a sitting before Aug 1 with the Agong’s consent.

The other two options are to hold an assembly sitting in August without a 28-day notice, or one in September with a 28-day notice, he said in a statement.

Perak has decided to hold its assembly sitting on Aug 25 following consent given by the sultan, while Perlis will hold its a day earlier.

Kedah will hold its assembly sitting only after Parliament reconvenes, similar to the PAS-led states of Kelantan and Terengganu.

The Selangor assembly is expected to reconvene earliest by the third week of August, while Pahang has set its sitting between Aug 16 and 20. Other states have yet to make a decision on when to hold their assembly sittings pending discussions with their legislatures and rulers.

The present emergency laws allow assemblies to be held before it expires on Aug 1 so long as there is consent by the Agong, and upon due application by the state rulers or governors. - FMT
