Police receive 42 reports related to vaccine scam, fraudulent sale

Police have received 42 reports related to the fraudulent sale of Covid-19 vaccine to the public and the activities of a syndicate, according to Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department.

The police have completed investigation into one of these cases where they found no evidence for further action.

In a statement today, department director Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said three cases involved the fraudulent sale of vaccines to the members of the public.

"Another report is related to a vaccination centre where the number of recipients exceeded the number of vaccines supplied," he said.

"As of today, eight individuals were nabbed to assist investigation into these (four) cases. They have since been released on police bail," he said.

"Investigation into one case has been completed and the Attorney-General's Chambers has decided not to press any charges against the suspects after police found no evidence," he said.

"The three remaining cases are still under probe," he said, advising the public against speculating on the investigation.

"The police have also detected a new modus operandi of a syndicate which deceives its victims by telling the latter they have been engaged in selling Covid-19 vaccines ."

"The victims were contacted by syndicate members disguised as health officers who told them action would be taken against them for selling Covid-19 vaccine online via Facebook," he said.

The frightened victims then followed all the instructions given to them and ultimately they made payment to a bank account.

"To date, 38 police reports have been received in these cases involving a loss of RM54,500," he added.  - Mkini
