Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has ended his crowdfunding campaign to cover his legal cost and bail for charges of misappropriating Bersatu funds with more than RM700,000 raised in just 24 hours.
The total amount of RM715,573.77 from 9,836 donors, as revealed by Syed Saddiq (above) in a Facebook post, is more than double the bail amount of RM330,000 set by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Wednesday.
"I owe my life to Malaysia. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
"I am forever indebted," he said.
"I will never stop until we succeed to build a Malaysia for all Malaysians.
"A Malaysia where every Malaysian can proudly call home. Our home," said the former youth and sports minister.
Syed Saddiq was released from detention after posting the first RM80,000 of the bail amount on Wednesday, with the remaining RM250,000 to be paid by next Tuesday.
"This evening there was an uncle who came to my office. I thought he was seeking help, but turned out he wanted to donate RM10.
"I felt like crying. It’s in moments like this, I am reminded why I joined politics," he said.
Syed Saddiq was charged with two counts of misappropriation.
On the first charge, he was accused of misappropriating RM1 million belonging to Bersatu on March 6 last year.
On the second charge, he was accused of dishonestly misappropriating RM120,000 of funds for the 14th general election collected for Bersatu Youth, between April 8 and 21, 2018.
Syed Saddiq claimed trial to both charges.
His supporters have since cried intimidation and targeted prosecution ahead of the forthcoming Parliament sitting. - Mkini
