Selayang is Selangor’s third full Covid-19 hospital

Selayang Hospital has been converted from a hybrid into a full Covid-19 hospital, the third such facility in Selangor.

This came as infections remain staggeringly high. The state has recorded 68,209 cases in the past 14 days.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah confirmed that the switch was made yesterday (July 21).

Non-Covid patients from Selayang Hospital will be transferred to other hospitals.

“A majority to private hospitals and some to other public hospitals,” he told Malaysiakini.

Resources are being mobilised but Noor Hisham did not provide details.

The two other full Covid hospitals in Selangor are Sungai Buloh Hospital and Ampang Hospital. The latter was converted on June 23.

The healthcare system continues to struggle to cope with the onslaught of patients.

A record 199 people died of Covid-19 yesterday, 84 of whom in Selangor.

Earlier this month, a Selayang Hospital frontliner told Malaysiakini that patients were having to share oxygen ports due to a lack of supply.

When outside parties organised efforts to fundraise to purchase oxygen supply, hospital authorities denied that it ever faced oxygen supply problems.

It also branded a message about the fundraiser as “fake”.

Just last week, the hospital’s mortuary was reportedly running out of space. This prompted a businessperson to donate a container to the hospital. - Mkini
