Faced with charges of misappropriating Bersatu funds, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has started a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for his legal cost as well as his RM330,000 bail.
“Want to fight, I fight. Bring it on,” he said on his social media channels last night, where he also published a poster for his fundraising campaign.
He also recorded a livestream that lasted 1 hour and 18 minutes last night, where he insisted on his innocence and encouraged his supporters to share the video widely and contribute to his legal funds.
Malaysiakini is unable to report details of the video’s contents due to the risk of committing sub judice.
Yesterday, Syed Saddiq was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with two counts of misappropriation.
On the first charge, he was accused of misappropriating RM1 million belonging to Bersatu on March 6 last year.
On the second charge, he was accused of dishonestly misappropriating RM120,000 of funds for the 14th general election collected for Bersatu Youth, between April 8 and 21, 2018.
Syed Saddiq has claimed trial to both charges.
Bail was set at RM330,000 with one surety for both charges, and he is also required to surrender his passport and report to the nearest MACC office in Kuala Lumpur once a month until disposal of the case.
However, Syed Saddiq was released from detention after posting the first RM80,000 of the bail, with the remaining RM250,000 to be paid by next Tuesday.
