PETALING JAYA: Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has been appointed as party election director with immediate effect, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Mohamad is also Barisan Nasional and Umno War Room chairman.
“Mohamad's post as Barisan deputy chairman will make the decision-making process much easier with regard to election preparations that involve all Barisan component parties,” Ahmad Zahid said in a statement Tuesday (July 13).
The Umno president also noted that the restructuring of Umno's election department would strengthen the organisation at every level of the party, including at the grassroots level.
He thanked Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman for his service as former Umno election director.
Tajuddin was appointed as Umno's election director for the 15th General Election (GE15) by Ahmad Zahid on Nov 4 last year.
There has been pressure earlier this year from within Umno for Tajuddin's removal as the party’s election director following unhappiness over his open criticism of other bureaus in the party and his failure to retain Umno’s allies.
On Monday (July 12), Tajuddin said that a majority of Umno supreme council members were in favour of withdrawing support for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the Prime Minister but they did not want to do it now.
Tajuddin said Umno was currently not ready to head into a general election.
The Pasir Salak MP also said that the present government no longer belongs to Muhyiddin, instead, it belongs to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who now has a chance to show the people that Umno works for them.
Tajuddin was reported to have voiced this during last week's Umno supreme council meeting.
His views were recorded in a 15-minute audio clip which he later confirmed. - Star
