PETALING JAYA: Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan has spoken on loyalty and toeing the party line in what appears to be a thinly-veiled jab at Umno ministers who have pledged to continue backing Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Earlier today, Muhyiddin’s Cabinet members, which include nine Umno MPs, gave their backing for him to remain as prime minister, despite the party’s move to withdraw support for the Bersatu president.
In a tweet, Ahmad said he could never have won his Pontian parliamentary seat without the support of the party, its leaders and election workers.
“As such, I should always be loyal and respect the parties’ decisions as enshrined in the code of conduct for Umno members.”
Last week, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party was withdrawing its support for Muhyiddin, urging the prime minister to resign from his post so that an interim prime minister could be appointed.
The announcement came hours after Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob was appointed deputy prime minister and Hishammuddin Hussein was promoted to senior minister.
Attorney-General Idrus Harun also said Muhyiddin would remain in the top post until his parliamentary majority is tested in the Dewan Rakyat, which reconvenes on July 26. - FMT
