PETALING JAYA: Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has slammed Umno’s decision to retract support for the prime minister during such a critical period for the nation.
The deputy youth and sports minister said such a move did not augur well for a nation rolling out a recovery plan.
Putrajaya had 10 days ago announced Pemulih, a RM150 billion aid package to help people and businesses through the lockdown which has been extended indefinitely.
“Zahid has clearly misplaced his priority as a statesman,” he told FMT, referring to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He went on to say that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had acknowledged and recognised that Umno should play a more dominant role in resolving Covid-19 related issues by making key appointments involving two senior leaders from the party.
Yesterday evening, Muhyiddin appointed Ismail Sabri Yaakob as his deputy and promoted Barisan Nasional treasurer Hishammuddin Hussein to take over Ismail as senior minister for security.
“Ismail Sabri and Hisham have proven their abilities in discharging their ministerial duties and Umno should be proud of such roles,” said the head of the Bersatu Youth wing, which is also known as Armada.
Zahid announced earlier this morning that Umno was officially withdrawing its support for Muhyiddin as prime minister with immediate effect, and called for the latter to step down.
Zahid made the announcement after a Supreme Council meeting, which lasted over four hours, at the party’s headquarters last night.
Reading out a prepared statement, Zahid said that the government failed to fulfil the two requirements that the party had set to justify support for Muhyiddin’s administration.
They were, realising the aspirations of the people and addressing the economic slowdown, as well as coming up with an effective plan to manage the Covid-19 pandemic. - FMT
