'Realise you have failed' - MCA Youth leader rebels against PM

An MCA Youth leader has broken ranks with his party to speak out against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, calling for his resignation.

Perak MCA chief Daniel Wa Wai How (above) said Muhyiddin should make way for a more qualified candidate to lead the country amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We can't see a clear direction from the country due to the political crisis eroding the effectiveness of the government.

"For me, personally, the prime minister should respectfully resign so that he can be replaced with a new prime minister," he told Sinar Harian.

The Malay daily said Wa suggested that the new prime minister's term is capped at six months to oversee efforts against the Covid-19 pandemic before the 15th general election is called.

Wa, who is also the MCA Youth secretary, was quoted as saying that Muhyiddin should realise that he has failed as the Covid-19 pandemic worsens.

Wa noted that major factories are being allowed by the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) to operate despite multiple Covid-19 clusters in such places.

In contrast, he said small and medium business owners are unable to earn an income while having to grapple with their commitments such as rent and utilities.

"For me, Malaysians need a leader who can lead the war against Covid-19 and revive the national economy, not a leader who uses the emergency to extend his time in power," Wa, who is also in the MCA central committee.

Among the possible replacements, he suggested Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is appealing his graft conviction

While Umno is split over its allegiance to Muhyiddin, other BN component parties including MCA have largely toed the line and backed Muhyiddin.

MCA has two parliamentarians, namely Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong, who is also the MCA president, and Tanjung Piai MP Wee Jeck Seng. - Mkini
