Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has appealed for allegations concerning Malaysian politicians and business people detailed in the Pandora Papers exposé to be debated in the Dewan Rakyat.
This comes after Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun rejected his emergency motion to debate them yesterday.
This afternoon, Anwar revealed on Facebook that he sent Azhar a letter appealing the rejection.
“I, the Port Dickson MP, urge for your agreement under Standing Order 90(2) and propose that my motion under Standing Order 18(1) and (2) that was rejected on Oct 6, 2021 will be allowed,” read the letter.
His motion was for the House to debate portions of the Pandora Papers that exposed possible illegal financial transactions involving several Malaysian political leaders and business people.
The letter was stamped by Azhar’s office with today’s date, indicating the speaker received it.
The speaker previously ruled that the allegations ought to be scrutinised by a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) or a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) instead.
The Pandora Papers refer to a trove of documents leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) - which Malaysiakini is a part of.
The leak was from firms that helped clients set up or manage offshore trusts and companies in tax havens.
Malaysiakini reported on information concerning Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Selayang MP William Leong, and former finance minister Daim Zainuddin. - Mkini
