Cabotage policy: Wee sends explanation letter to Dewan Rakyat speaker

After being accused of misleading the Dewan Rakyat on the cabotage policy, Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong said he has sent a written explanation to the speaker as well as Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim.

In a statement, Wee said he would also elaborate further on the issue "in detail" during the upcoming debate between him and Lim, who is DAP secretary-general.

"For information, I have sent an official written explanation letter in response to Bagan and Bukit Mertajam's motions to Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun on Oct 12, and it was received by the speaker's office on Oct 13.

"You can refer to the copy of the letter that I attached here. I am sure that Bagan and Bukit Mertajam MPs have also received the same letter as what I sent to the Dewan Rakyat speaker.

"I will also elaborate further in detail regarding this issue during a debate session with Lim soon, to be held after Budget 2022 is tabled this Oct 29.

"I am waiting for Lim; when you are free let's debate!," Wee said in a Facebook post.

Filed a motion

The MCA president's statement came after Azhar instructed him to provide an explanation over his statement on the cabotage policy on Sept 30, which is said to have misled the house.

The instruction came after Lim filed a motion under Clause 36(12) of the Standing Order on Oct 11, requesting Wee to be referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee for misleading the house.

According to the Bagan MP, Wee's statement is considered to be in conflict with a written reply by Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa on Oct 5.

On Sept 30, Wee told Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia's cabotage policy was not the reason why the country was not involved in the Apricot subsea cable project.

However, Annuar said in a written reply that Facebook and Google "bypassed" Malaysia for the landing of the Apricot project "in view of the unresolved issue concerning the exemption for the cabotage policy". - Mkini
