Couple fined RM5,000 each for crossing state lines without full Covid-19 vaccination

KOTA TINGGI: A married couple was fined RM5,000 each for travelling without being fully vaccinated when they were stopped at a roadblock at Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kulai here.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said that the duo, aged 29 and 19, were travelling from Ulu Kinta, Perak and were heading towards Bandar Tenggara, Kota Tinggi.

"The couple was stopped for inspection at a roadblock at about 12.50pm on Monday (Oct 18).

"Investigations revealed that they were travelling from Perak and were heading to the husband's hometown here," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 19).

He added that according to the couple's MySejahtera apps, they were not fully vaccinated, which was a violation of the National Recovery Period (Phase 3) regulations.

The couple was then issued RM5,000 compound notices each for the offence under Section 17 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 2021.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, a 52-year-old man was found dead after going for a hike at Gunung Lambak, Kluang.

The victim, identified as Teo Chee Kiong, was believed to have suffered from a heart attack while heading down the mountain.

Kluang Fire and Rescue Department operation commander senior officer Noorhakim Nordin said they received a distress call from members of the public at about 12.25pm on Tuesday (Oct 19).

"The victim was found unconscious by members of the public who were also hiking there.

"A medical team pronounced the man dead after examining the body. The case was then handed over to the police for further action," he said, adding that the man was travelling alone.
