PARLIAMENT | Efforts to decriminalise suicide is moving forward after the Home Ministry and Attorney-General’s Chambers have agreed to it.
This was revealed by Deputy Health Minister Aaron Ago Dagang (above) in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He said the next step is to bring the matter to the cabinet for deliberation before amendments are made to the Penal Code to decriminalise suicide.
Under Section 309 of the Penal Code, attempting suicide is punishable by up to one year imprisonment, or a fine, or both.
Aaron was responding to a query from Che Alias Ahmad (PN-Kemaman) who wanted to know how decriminalisation could help reduce suicide attempts, and what the government was doing to fast track decriminalisation.
Calls for the decriminalisation of suicide have been making rounds for a long time.
The Health Ministry previously backed a push to decriminalise suicide, with its director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah and minister Khairy Jamaluddin speaking out on mental health.
