Idris scoffs at power-hungry jibe, tells of CM offer last year

Idris Haron and three other Melaka assembly members precipitated the Melaka elections by withdrawing support from the state government.

MELAKA: Idris Haron, the man at the centre of Melaka’s recent political turmoil, has rejected claims of seeking the chief ministership and said he had been offered the post after the Sheraton Move last year.

In an interview with FMT in Melaka, the former chief minister dismissed the “shallow” claims that he had defected from the Barisan Nasional-led state government just so that he can regain the post which he had held from 2013 to 2018.

“I don’t see that as a solid enough reason to cause such a major shift to happen in Melaka. If my goal was to become the chief minister again, it would have happened long ago,” he said.

“Because when the (federal) government changed due to the Sheraton Move (in March 2020) there were already offers at the time for me to be with them (PH) and they invited me to lead Melaka.

“And I didn’t accept it, because I advised the PH government then to give BN a chance to lead (the state) and then we’ll see how things go.”

Idris, who is assemblyman for Sungai Udang, said the main reason he and three other assemblymen retracted their support for the state government was that chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali’s government was just a “puppet”.

Idris said Sulaiman had failed as chief minister as he was forced to answer to other figures who were not even a part of the state government.

He said that was why he had claimed there were “two lions on one mountain” in the running of the state.

Asked who was this other “lion”, Idris quipped that it was as clear as day.

“The (state assembly) speaker was a show-off and announced the assembly’s dissolution, while the chief minister sat on the side. Then a few more announcements were made on government procedures.

“So from there, we could see who the two lions were. What should have been done by the chief minister or the state secretary, was done by the speaker,” referring to Melaka Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh.

“And we questioned his position as the (state) chairman of a political party and holding the speaker’s post, which is supposed to be impartial,” he said, adding that the conflict of interest almost led to a constitutional crisis.

Asked about which party he was heading to next, Idris said he was still meeting presidents and leaders of various parties, thanking them for their interest in recruiting him as a member.

While he said it was too early to say who he would be joining, he assured that it would definitely be a party under PH’s “big tent”.

He added: “(PH) will give the people of the state of Melaka a better offer in the coming state elections.” - FMT
