International borders may reopen by early December - minister

PARLIAMENT
 | Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri said international borders may be reopened nationwide by early December, depending on the situation of the international tourism travel bubble pilot project in Langkawi.

The minister said the situation in Langkawi needs to be observed first before the international borders can be reopened.

“We had placed a three-month (evaluation period for Langkawi). I do not think it will take three months, I think we can reopen earlier than that.

“So let us pray that it will happen in the near future, after Nov 16 and maybe in early December, Insya-Allah. I am not promising anything, but we will try, we will work on it,” Nancy said.

She was responding to a question from M Karuppaiya (Pakatan Harapan-Padang Serai) who had asked about the timeline for international borders to be reopened for the whole country, during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

It was previously announced that Langkawi would be the pilot project for the international tourism bubble.

Under this travel bubble, fully vaccinated foreign visitors from a list of countries approved by local authorities will be allowed to visit the island without undergoing a Covid-19 quarantine, among other rules.

Langkawi was also the pilot project for a domestic travel bubble that opened on Sept 16.

Nancy had today also answered questions from several MPs on plans to introduce travel bubbles to other parts of the country, like that in Langkawi.

She explained that when the domestic travel bubble was first introduced in Langkawi, interstate travel was still not allowed.

Now that the interstate travel restrictions have been lifted, she said there is no longer a need for domestic travel bubbles. - Mkini
