PKR Students' Wing rues lack of consultation in appointing ex-student leaders

The PKR Students' Wing is upset that the party’s Youth wing has appointed leaders to its own student bureau without consulting the students' wing.

In a statement last night, the wing's central leadership committee said it felt slighted by the appointments made by PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir earlier yesterday.

It said Akmal’s appointments were inappropriate because the appointed leaders are not students themselves, but have already completed their studies.

“These actions show that the Youth wing chief does not care about students and made the appointments without due consideration.

“These appointments can be seen as being made willy-nilly just to fill vacancies in the bureau because there was no discussion with the students’ wing, whichs is active in running programmes to resolve problems faced by students.

“As PKR Youth chief, he should resolve this issue through consensus and come to a mutual understanding to avoid tensions between the student bureau and the student wing,” the PKR Students’ Wing added.

It was responding to Akmal’s announcement yesterday that the youth wing is re-establishing its student bureau in a bid to strengthen the party, especially among university students.

In line with the announcement, Akmal also announced that former University of Malaya Student Union president Muhammad Haziq Azfar Ishak is now chief of the newly re-established student bureau. Haziq had joined PKR on Sept 16.

Meanwhile, former student leaders Tan Ray Ming, Irfan Mahzan, Aqilah Zainuzi, Chew Yi Suen and Shukrul Khair were announced as bureau members.

“As PKR Youth chief, I believe the existence of such a platform is an important move towards maximising the youth wing’s strength, and will raise support towards PKR among students,” Akmal said. - Mkini
