Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will nominate Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor as deputy speaker of the Dewan Rakyat.
This was revealed by Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan today, who added that the move was also endorsed by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"This will make history.... (Ramli, above) will be the first Orang Asli to be nominated," said Ahmad on his Facebook page today.
Today is the last day to file motions for the next Dewan Rakyat sitting on Oct 25.
Under the Standing Orders, motions must be filed 14 days before a sitting.
The Federal Constitution allows for two deputy speakers and there has been one vacancy since late August.
Ahmad was previously in the running for the position and later withdrew.
Ramli, 63, is a relatively new MP. He won the seat in January 2019 during a by-election.
Prior to politics, he was a police officer who retired with the rank of assistant commissioner.
He currently sits on Amanah Raya Berhad's board as chairperson. - Mkini
