MELAKA: Cooperation between Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Barisan Nasional (BN) at the federal level could be duplicated in the upcoming Melaka state election, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said today.

He added that there was no issue of disunity between PN and BN in Melaka because of the cooperation that had been proven at the federal level.

“Therefore, it could certainly be the same in the Melaka state election as well on Nov 20.

“If we can work together across the country, then there is no problem of disunity,” he said at a press conference following the launch of Melaka PN’s election machinery here.

Also present were PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, Gerakan president Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, and Melaka PN chairman Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen.

Hamzah, who is also Bersatu secretary-general, said PN would be announcing its cooperation with BN and how it would be facing the Melaka state polls soon.

Meanwhile, Samsuri said PAS was optimistic that cooperation between PN and Muafakat Nasional (MN) could be achieved and that the Islamist party would continue to play an important role in strengthening cooperation between component parties in PN and MN ahead of the state election.

Samsuri said that each component party in PN and MN had their respective roles in determining the country’s political direction.

“PAS is optimistic that cooperation between PN and MN can be achieved. That is why the issue of PAS marginalising any party from PN or MN does not arise,” he added.

According to Samsuri, PAS have also held a series of formal and informal meetings at various levels to explore ways to improve the understanding between them and the Bersatu and Umno leadership, including in terms of seat allocation.

However, he said the number of seats targeted by PAS could not be revealed as it was part of the party’s strategy in facing the Melaka state elections. - FMT
