KOTA KINABALU: The relaxation of various restrictions plus the declining adherence of the standard operating procedures (SOP) are likely contributing to the high number of symptomatic or sporadic cases in Sabah.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said people's eagerness to return to their pre-pandemic lifestyle led to negligence in adhering to the SOP while socialising at the workplace and in public.
"Sabah reported 502 cases today, a drop of 90 cases compared to yesterday. However, the number of new cases detected via symptomatic screenings was high.
"They comprised 179 or 35.7 per cent of the caseload," he said in a statement today.
Masidi said from the 502 cases, 223 were backlogged cases. This means only 279 cases or 55.6 per cent of the caseload happened in the last 24 hours.
Overall, Masidi said 17 districts recorded a decline in cases, eight saw an increase while two districts maintained yesterday's figures.
"Ranau recorded the highest number of infections at 56, followed by Keningau and Kota Kinabalu, with 49 cases each," he said.
He also said out of the total figure, 306 had been vaccinated, with 297 already fully-vaccinated while nine had been inoculated once.
Another 82 cases involved unvaccinated people, while 114 cases involved those who were not eligible for the vaccine.
He added the number of cases in Categories 3, 4, and 5 which require hospitalisation and/or intensive care were low.
"Five patients in Category 3, three in Category 4, and only one patient in Category 5. Meanwhile, almost 97 per cent of the caseload were in Categories 1 and 2.
"Seven more cases are still under further investigation by the state Health Department," he said.
No new clusters were reported and Sabah registered four fatalities – two in Tenom and one each in Sandakan and Keningau.
As of yesterday, 72.17 per cent of Sabah's adult population have been fully vaccinated.- NST
