Students to be taught self protection from sexual violence

The government will ensure the wellbeing and safety of students, says education Radzi Jidin.

PETALING JAYA: Psychoeducation on reproductive health and programmes dealing with sexual harassment will be introduced in schools, education minister Radzi Jidin said.

Radzi said the education ministry will be collaborating with NGOs to implement the programmes.

He said this in a written reply in Parliament to Maszlee Malik (Ind-Simpang Renggam), who wanted to know the initiatives taken by the ministry to prevent sexual harassment cases in schools.

Radzi said the programmes will include brochures to be distributed to the students, and infographics.

He said counselling teachers’ will provide advice to sexually harassed students to ensure their wellbeing and safety are taken care of.

“Based on existing regulations, students must report to teachers, their parents or guardians if they have been sexually harassed so that the school can take immediate action to address the issue.

“Parents or guardians are also obliged to report sexual harassment issues to the police so that investigations and action can be taken,” he said. - FMT
